Senior Vice President | Chief Program/Service Officer WestCare Foundation, Inc. | www.westcare.com Office Address: 5999 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg, FL

Friday, October 16th from 1:30 - 4:30 PM

Drug-involved individuals with deficits in the areas of knowledge, critical thinking, values and emotional literacy require a framework for recovery that emphasizes habilitation.

Habilitation requires the creation of an individualized (person responsive), trauma-focused and strengths-based recovery plan that focuses on building social supports, treating institutionalization and addressing core clinical issues.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy involving psychoeducation, role play and testing are key elements of a developmental recovery framework that emphasizes habilitation.

This session will include an interactive conversation about developmental recovery, habilitation vs. rehabilitation, and innovative strategies for helping individuals achieve and sustain recovery.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Participants will understand habilitation vs. rehabilitation, and what each means for individuals with SUD or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.
  2. Participants will be able to understand and practice a framework that addresses the many aspects of arrested development.
  3. Participants will be able to identify and understand strategies for utilizing learning experiences as a method of intervention.
  4. Participants will be exposed to a core list of clinical issues and be able to give examples of how to address these issues.
