Interventions for Working with LGBTQ+ Couples Using Gottman's Sound Relationship House Theory

Friday, June 17th

1:30 PM - 4:30 PM

Description

LGBTQ+ relationships face multiple challenges from fighting for the right to marry, adopt children, be accepted by family, or simply ordering a wedding cake. When living in less affirming areas, there may be pressure to hide their relationship in public or at work, leading to hesitance to seek out relationship therapy.  Other nuances can further impact a relationship when one same-sex partner transitions. This workshop will deliver research-backed resources clinicians can incorporate into their practice that guides LGBTQ+ couples through the challenges and strengthen their relationships.

Learning Objectives

Objective 1 - Identify the common differences in LGBTQ+ relationships related to the overlapping of relationship experiences and sexual orientation issues.

Objective 2 - Explore the barriers to emotional intimacy and the role of internalized shame and guilt in LGBTQ+ relationships.

Objective 3 - Understand the Sound Relationship House Theory (SRHT) and the nine components found in healthy relationships.

Objective 4 - Apply the components of SRHT as an effective intervention when working with LGBTQ+ couples.
