Description

Ethics and Laws & Rules courses or seminars are often presented in kind of a "Gotcha!" format, where the presenter asks questions, knowing they will get at least partially wrong answers, and then trapping the answerer into the humiliating experience of being told that they are unethical in front of everybody. The combination of these two factors makes these courses something to be endured, and certainly nothing to be approached in a manner which would be considered by anyone to be, "user-friendly," and certainly not anything remotely considered enjoyable. The subject of Laws & Rules became like a diet — This horrible thing that you have to deal with for some period of time, and, when you’re done, you go back to living in blissful ignorance in the same manner you had before. Well — Apparently, so did they! Almost everyone of them thanked me profusely and said pretty much the same thing: “I’ve learned more in the last 20 minutes than I did in all my ethics classes combined!” Now, I do not think I teach more in a 20 minute conversation than all their ethics classes. But I do think they enjoyed the learning so much that they will remember the lesson. If you remember what it was like to be the classroom with that favorite professor — You know — The one who made it fun and exciting - That was a gift that was given to you! I hope I have done that for my students. I still want to make it fun for myself and others. Otherwise, what’s the point? Life is too short!
