Lourdes Araujo, PhD, EdD, LMHC

SMHCA President - Elect

Dr. Lourdes Araujo is a licensed bilingual mental health counselor with expertise in treating trauma and mood disorders in individuals of all ages. She operates from a humanistic-constructivist perspective, with research interests in trauma, education, diversity, multiculturalism, and extensive work with the Latino population. Her comprehensive research includes topics such as domestic violence, human trafficking, and sexual abuse.

Dr. Araujo's training includes Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Victim-Centered Approach for Trauma, and Holistic Mindfulness approaches in counseling, both in individual and group formats. She uses unique trauma-focused and mindfulness therapeutic techniques while working with clients and victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, human trafficking, and sexual abuse, helping them regain control of their lives and achieve success.

Apart from being an Assistant Professor at Grand View University, where she teaches in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program, Dr. Araujo is also the President-Elect of the Florida Counseling Association for 2023-2024. Additionally, the President-Elect for the Suncoast Mental Health Counseling Association.

Dr. Araujo's ultimate goal is to make a difference in people's lives, one person at a time. She is passionate about giving back to her community and, in small steps, to the world.

Description

Clinicians will learn the physical and behavioral indicators of the victims. The mental health professionals will review a "Respond to Sex Exploitation and Human Trafficking Protocol that can be modified and practiced at their sites after the training. Participants will learn and practice the Victim-Centered Approach techniques used in trauma.

Learning Objectives

  1. Evaluate the various types of trauma experienced by victims of human trafficking.
  2. Define the signs that can help identify victims of sex exploitation and human trafficking, specifically related to mental health.

  3. Assess the Clinical Behavioral and Emotional indicators useful when working with the Victims.
  4. Practice techniques used in a victim-centered approach to trauma care.
