A Critical Look at the Disease Model of Addiction and the 12-Step Model of Treatment

Description

In this training, the practitioner will gain knowledge of the history of substance abuse treatment in our country and learn new ways in which the LMHC can distinguish themselves as the addiction specialists. This training will take a critical look at the disease model of addiction and the 12-step model. Finally, this training will show the LMHC practitioner how their approach to counseling for other disorders, may just be what is needed to turn around our current crisis in addiction treatment.

Learning Objectives

Objective 1 - Participants in this training will learn a short history of addiction treatment in the United States.

Objective 2 - Participants will learn how 12-models of addiction are religiously based and forced participation is discriminatory.

Objective 3 - Participants will learn how labeling and the disease model of addiction and is flawed and has done harm in our society.

Objective 4 - Participants will learn how they can use their own approach to counseling to treat addiction issues without infusing religion or requiring external locus of control.

Presenter

                                            

This training is provided by Dr. Martin Cortez Wesley, the current president of Suncoast. Dr. Wesley has been a licensed therapist for over 20 years and has been in social service-related work for over 30 years. He has been licensed in Arizona as a CPC and LPC, Kentucky as a LPCC-S and now Florida as a LMHC. He has been a licensed and certified Addiction Counselor for more than 20 years, in Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky and nationally with NAADAC. He is also a NCC and BC-TMH provider with NBCC. He currently works as a clinician in both Kentucky and Florida through his website WesleyCounseling.com.


Dr. Wesley has been teaching for more than 25 years and is currently serving as a professor for the counseling programs at National Louis University in Tampa. He also works as a subject matter expert and item writer for the NCMHCE and BC-TMH exam with NBCC. He is the president of the Center for Training, Education and Credentialing which runs CounselorEd.com He is a strong advocate for LGBTQ rights and is especially concerned with transgender issues. He has been a researcher on several counseling related topics including Animal-Assisted Therapy.
