Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern Representative

Purpose

The Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern (RMHCI) Representative serves as the voice, advocate, and liaison for Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns within the Suncoast Mental Health Counseling Association (SMHCA). As a member of the Board of Directors, the RMHCI Representative provides leadership in advancing the professional development, engagement, and success of emerging counselors while supporting SMHCA's mission to strengthen the counseling profession through advocacy, education, collaboration, and professional excellence. 

Core Responsibilities

Leadership

• Represent the interests, perspectives, and professional needs of Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns to the Executive Board.
• Provide leadership in developing initiatives that support interns throughout their journey toward independent licensure.
• Encourage leadership development by promoting volunteerism, committee participation, and future board service among RMHCIs.
• Identify emerging trends and challenges affecting interns and recommend strategies that enhance member engagement and professional growth.

Advocacy

• Advocate for the professional interests and development of Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns throughout Florida.
• Promote ethical practice, professional identity, and lifelong learning consistent with the counseling profession.
• Serve as a resource by connecting interns with accurate information regarding licensure requirements, professional resources, and state regulations.
• Support legislative and professional advocacy efforts that advance the counseling profession and protect access to quality mental health care.

Professional Representation

• Serve as a professional ambassador for SMHCA by building relationships with interns, counselor educators, clinical supervisors, licensed mental health counselors, and community partners.
• Promote the value of SMHCA membership and encourage active participation in association programs, conferences, networking events, and continuing education opportunities.
• Represent SMHCA at professional meetings, educational events, and community activities as appropriate.

Professional Development

• Collaborate with the Board and committee leaders to develop educational programming that addresses the unique needs of Registered Mental Health Counseling Interns.
• Support opportunities that strengthen clinical competence, ethical decision-making, leadership, supervision readiness, and professional identity.
• Promote networking, mentorship, and continuing education opportunities that prepare interns for successful professional practice and independent licensure.

Partnerships & Collaboration

• Foster collaborative relationships with Florida counselor education programs, clinical supervisors, professional organizations, and community stakeholders.
• Encourage partnerships that strengthen the connection between graduate education, supervised clinical practice, and professional association involvement.
• Collaborate with counselor educators and licensed professionals to expand educational programming and support future counselors entering the profession.

Communication & Member Engagement

• Maintain open communication with RMHCIs regarding professional development opportunities, licensure updates, advocacy efforts, and association initiatives.
• Gather feedback from interns to identify needs, challenges, and opportunities that inform future programming.
• Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and supportive professional community that encourages engagement and belonging.
